In aerospace, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets are subjected to extreme conditions, demanding stringent performance and durability standards. Temperature resistance is paramount. Aerospace applications expose magnets to wide temperature fluctuations, from cryogenic conditions at high altitudes to extreme heat near engines. Standard NdFeB magnets may lose magnetism at temperatures above 80°C, but aerospace-grade variants (e.g., N48H, N50SH) are engineered with additives like dysprosium or terbium to enhance thermal stability, maintaining performance up to 200°C. For example, in satellite attitude control systems, NdFeB magnets in torque rods must withstand temperature swings from -150°C to 100°C while maintaining precise magnetic fields to adjust the satellites orientation.

Mechanical robustness is another critical requirement. Vibrations from launch vehicles, turbulence during flight, or mechanical stress in rotating components can damage magnets. Aerospace NdFeB magnets are often encased in high-strength alloys (e.g., titanium, Inconel) or reinforced with composite materials to resist cracking or chipping. In jet engine sensors, for instance, magnets are mounted in shock-absorbing housings to withstand the intense vibrations of turbine blades, ensuring accurate readings of rotational speed or pressure.

Corrosion resistance is essential, especially in atmospheric or space environments. NdFeB magnets are prone to oxidation due to their iron content, which can degrade magnetic performance over time. Aerospace applications use protective coatings such as nickel-copper-nickel plating, gold plating, or epoxy encapsulation to shield magnets from moisture, oxygen, and cosmic radiation. Satellites, which operate in the vacuum of space, rely on these coatings to prevent magnet degradation from solar wind particles, ensuring long-term functionality (often 10+ years) without maintenance.

Magnetic stability under radiation is also a key requirement. High-energy particles in space can disrupt the magnetic domains in NdFeB magnets, reducing their strength. To mitigate this, aerospace-grade magnets undergo radiation-hardening treatments, such as annealing at specific temperatures to stabilize their microstructure. This ensures consistent performance in radiation-prone environments, such as in the magnetometers of interplanetary probes, which must maintain accurate magnetic field measurements to navigate through planetary atmospheres.

Finally, weight reduction is critical for fuel efficiency in aerospace. NdFeB magnetshigh magnetic strength-to-weight ratio allows for smaller, lighter components compared to alternatives like ferrite magnets. This is vital in electric propulsion systems for spacecraft, where every kilogram saved reduces launch costs and extends mission range. For example, NdFeB-based ion thrusters use compact magnets to generate magnetic fields that accelerate ions, achieving higher fuel efficiency than traditional chemical rockets.
