A magnetic distance meter, also referred to as a magnetic rangefinder, is a precision measuring instrument that utilizes magnetic principles to determine the distance between two points. Unlike optical or ultrasonic rangefinders, magnetic distance meters operate based on the relationship between magnetic field strength and distance, making them suitable for use in environments where optical or acoustic signals may be obstructed or distorted.

The core working principle involves emitting a magnetic field from a transmitter and detecting the magnetic flux density at a receiver. The distance between the two points is calculated based on the inverse square law, which states that magnetic field strength decreases with the square of the distance from the source. Advanced models may use alternating magnetic fields or phase-shift measurement techniques to improve accuracy and reduce interference from external magnetic fields.

Magnetic distance meters offer several advantages, including high accuracy in harsh environments such as dusty, smoky, or underwater conditions. They are also resistant to electromagnetic interference, making them suitable for industrial settings with heavy machinery. Common applications include position monitoring in manufacturing processes, level measurement in tanks and silos, and distance measurement in construction and mining operations. However, their measurement range is typically limited compared to optical rangefinders, and they may be affected by the magnetic properties of surrounding materials.
